Las Vegas Sun to Endorse Hillary Clinton

Just got the email from Jon Ralston. It reads:

Expected move with family members that own paper openly supporting her. So Sun helps her with endorsement and RJ helps her with backhanded Obama nod that will energize Democrats for Clinton. So now it's Culinary vs. the newspapers and Democratic  elite: Maybe they are the underdog! I can hear it now....

This is a good endorsement from Clinton. The Sun is the preferred paper of Democrats in Nevada. In fact, I'd say the Sun is widely considered the main political paper in Nevada.

She had the DesMoines Register (2.00 / 1)

... and came in third

Turnout, turnout, turnout.

Still, I'll take it.

You got me there. (2.00 / 1)

Turn out baby turn out!

A $25 dollar chip for all who caucus for her!  It couldn't cost more than $750,000 I wouldn't think.

Seriously it makes me wish some of the bigger states had caucuses.  Could you imagine Ny, Philly, Chicago?  What would go on?   It would be interesting.

Re: She had the DesMoines Register (none / 0)

I think coercion story may have another wrinkle.  Question who determines who is allowed to leave their shift to go caucus?  the union ?  that conclusion seems to actually be supported by what is reported in the Las Vegas Sun article.

The union may be able to determine who the casion managers let leave their shift to go caucus. The caucus takes up to 1-2 hours.  Almost eveyone working there at that time frame is a member of the CWA. Not every worker can be allowed to caucus in that time frame....because the casino would just stop functioning.
So how do you actually get the time off to go caucus?  Well the union intervenes with the employer, the casino, to let x number of persons to leave.  It also seems the union could intervene in terms of who is allowed to go caucus.

Indeed from an article in the Las Vegas Sun about such an incident in which they very much let the union off the hook...I think

http://www.lasvegass...

"But Antuna tells a different story. She said she was filling out a voter registration form when the union reps approached her about Obama. When she told them she wasn't sure about caucusing for him, one rep took her registration form, indeed telling her that she couldn't participate Saturday if she wasn't supporting Obama"

Note that while the reporter thinks the registration issue rebuts the coercion claim, it does no such thing as Antuna still claims the union rep still told her if she didn't caucus for Obama, she couldn't caucus.

snip

then after it created a brouhaha with other CWA members who protested the union rep's behavior this is said in the update at the bottom of the article.

"In fact, Antuna said the Culinary called her later to inform her the union had received her voter registration form, spoken with her supervisor and that she was clear to caucus during her shift on Saturday."

So indeed it does seems the union controls who get to caucus because it intercedes with the casino as to who will be allowed to leave their shift to go caucus.

Is this coercion or carefully making sure only Obama supporters get into the room?

Re: Las Vegas Sun to Endorse Hillary Clinton (2.00 / 2)

What is so funny to me is that people keep calling Clinton the candidate of the elite, when it is the good old blue collar lunchbox crowd who keep voting for her (and Edwards), and the over $100,000 Ivy-leaguers who keep voting for Obama.

That is some hysterical spin.

Re: Las Vegas Sun to Endorse Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

If you know anything about Nevada politics, you'd know that the sun is a product of the Greenspans...

Long time advocates of the Clintons, so this is no surprise.

Most importantly, nobody reads the LV Sun...its tucked in the RJ

I wouldn't agree with that. (2.00 / 1)

It's recognized as the lib paper. When visiting I've read it and it's extreme right wing competitor in a desultory sort of way. Depending what was on shelf in coffee shop. At least the demoratic paper is endorsing the democrat not that these endorsements mean much. Good news the Culinary "orders to vote" are getting lots of play though.

Re: I wouldn't agree with that. (none / 0)

Trust me...I live here. NOBODY reads the Sun.

Ralston is influential and has the pulse of Nevada politics...he writes for the Sun.

You are correct, endorsements mean nothing. Polls mean nothing. Nevada is a complete question mark. I caucased for Dean in 04 and there was only a handful of people who showed up (7000) I believe, so who knows.

It is huge that the Judge threw that shitty lawsuit out.

Chicagogene: you overstate your case. (2.00 / 2)

Clearly someone reads the Sun otherwise they'd be out of business. I've see their dispensers everywhere and I've seen it in lots of coffee shops. I don't think the lawsuit matters much at the end of the day, no one ever thought it was likely survive a legal challenge. It may have done Clinton a bit of damage but that's probably been counterbalanced by union strong arm stories now in circulation. And yes it's a complete question mark and the whole thing is not very important for her, maybe a bit more so for him. It's a screwy system like IA and a win or lose is not fatal for either. I hope she wins because I'm a Clintonista but it's not make or break anymore than SC which is also going to be perceived as slightly odd because of race issues. FL is much more important although technically it isn't.

Re: I wouldn't agree with that. (2.00 / 2)

I used to think no one read the sun either. But then I got involved in politics and found out more people read the Sun than the RJ, aside from people who just skim through the RJ. If you're saying no one reads the sun you know nothing about Las Vegas. I was born and raised in Las Vegas. Trust me, people read the Sun.

Bullshit. No one reads the sun.Umm plenty of people read the sun. Elderly people for starters. Second it has the primary political coverage in Nevada. Jon Ralston works for the sun

Re: Las Vegas Sun to Endorse Hillary Clinton (2.00 / 1)

Oh my god, this is great news. This will help, but nothing is in the bag. Let's wait until caucus night.

By the way, I'm not watching TV all day that day, so please provide good details on the MyDD blog. I just won't be able to take it. My energy will be too elevated.

Re: Las Vegas Sun to Endorse Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

Long expected, Brian Greenspun was Bill's college roommate. Hillary's likely to win but this won't be the reason.

Endorsements that might make a difference will be rural papers -- Nevada Appeal in Carson, Lahotan Valley Times, etc.

This is great news coming from you. But I want to wait until caucus night. I don't want to jinx Hill.
